Mammals (updated 3/6/2023)

White Footed Deer Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), a family is living under the tractor. I was able to pick one up and put in a bucket for photo, then released.

Young White-tailed Deer in prairie Plot.

Since I have not hunted on the property for deer since the land was purchased in 2010 this was a good shot to show how close you can get to them occasionally. (Billy Finney in photo).

Bobcat that was not overly concerned that I was there. Picture taken from window of my truck as I was parking.
Plenty of  Raccoons,  see at least one almost every trip.
Fox Squirrels are becoming more abundant as planted trees are aging and providing the proper habitat for nests and forage.

White-tailed Deer in Meadow

Raccoon

Swamp Rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus)

Whitetail Deer with fawn.
River Otter (Lontra canadensis) in large pond.

I got the opportunity to watch this bobcat several times. This time for nearly twenty minutes in broad daylight.

Pretty normal to see several any given morning or evening if you are quiet.

Hog populations on the property fluctuate this particular one had six little ones...seen below a few weeks after this photo was taken. I have not seen any damage to the property at least not anything large scale or permanent.

I knew it was only a matter of time given the proximity to one of the largest breeding poulations in the state before they showed up on the property and .....well here he is.

He began showing up right around cane harvest time. Probably flushed out of his usual routine and range by those big green John Deer tractors and combines. He held up on the property for a few weeks and then disappeared. Maybe I'll see him again.

I have only seen one during the day but there are signs everywhere....seems like there is something for everyone at the property.

My son's favorite....he loves them because they are a guaranteed find every trip and you can sneak up to within a foot or two of them for close inspection.
